I spent a day wandering around the streets and canals of Amsterdam, I saw Anne Franks house, but didn't go in - I was amazed at the number of bicycles around the city. My Girlfriend at the time was very interested in the red light district - and we saw some very interesting things in the "shop" windows!
About a decade after my first visit, I found myself near Amsterdam on a business trip with two colleagues, and when I suggested that we catch the train into Amsterdam for the evening they jumped at the idea. Of course we eventually found ourselves in the Red Light district - and the funniest thing I saw all evening was a bouncer of one of the clubs drumming up trade in the most direct manner. it went like this..
Bouncer: (to a man walking past) You, you speak English? Passerby: (Nods) Bouncer: (pointing to club door) Right, inside. Passerby: (pauses, moves to doorway, and then inside)
Only the Dutch could be that direct (and get away with it!)
