Day 1 Fri 17 Dec 2004
Up at 5:20 to get to the airport by 6:30, checked in with no problems. I'm glad I wasn't in the queue with the extended family and the huge amount of excess luggage! While waiting in the lounge I got chatting to an Iranian Dentist who works in London during the week, and lives in Sweden - yes, he commutes from Sweden! He left Iran in the late 70's and ended up in Sweden, as Germany wouldn't let him in.
I was one of the first people on the plane, and sat in the first row, next to a (very pretty) Swedish Nanny who was heading home for Christmas. The flight was uneventful, and I was first off the flight, and first through passport control. I got my bus ticket to get me into Stockholm, got on the bus, and then waited for everyone else to collect their luggage and get on the bus! An hour and a half later we arrived in Stockholm.
After a bit of confusion about where the bus station was on my map, I headed off to find my hotel. As I was walking across a bridge I spotted a sign for the Hotel, so I back tracked, and walked down the steps on the side of the bridge. I checked in with no problems (Expedia strikes again), the room is very nice, but I've got things to do and see.
The weather is overcast with a biting wind. I walked downtown, and had a look around Gamla Stan, a very picturesque part of the city. I found a little market setting Christmas nick nacks right next door to the Nobel Museum. Back to the Hotel due to the dark/cold/feeling sleepy! Ready to plan what to do tomorrow.
