Day 36 - Mon 7 May 07 - Madrid, Spain
Well, the first half of the flight was bumpy, not bad, but just enough that I couldn't relax. I guess that's what you get for flying over the Andes and the Amazon. The plane was an old 340-600 with no personal screens. I'm very glad I had my iPod. 11hrs on a plan is too long, I'm never doing that again. Anyway got to Madrid in one piece. The only way to get a shower was to go through security again, so I decided to skip that ordeal.
I asked the Spanish immigration lady for a stamp in the passport which she duly gave me. She was a bit off hand, but when she saw the Easter Island stamp she warmed up considerably. It's somewhere she's always wanted to go.
I eventually got out of the airport - it's huge, and took the metro to Chamartin station. Dumped my stuff in a locker for 3€ and headed into the city centre to get some photos. Well if that isn't Countrybagging I don't know what is! Back to the station at 17:45 for the 19:00 train. The train departed on time, and I've booked my table in the buffet car for 20:00.
Supper was excellent - Chicken for the main course with a chocolate cake for dessert. There's something about train travel, hacking through the countryside with the sun setting over cornfields and mountains eating a damn fine chocolate cake! Oh and a small bottle of Roja. Better than a bloody plane.
