Day 1 - Wed 29 June 2011
Panic - the taxi I booked last night was to arrive at 10:00, at 08:55 I looked at the timetable and realised that my train was leaving at 10:00. Aggghhhh! The taxi company couldn't send a taxi any earlier - so in the end I rang a pal and he kindly diverted from going to work to pick me up and drop me at the station. As it happened the trains were running late and I stepped onto the delayed 09:30 at 09:47.
Run down to London was un-eventful and I walked over to Paddington. Caught the 12:06 and that got to Exeter a few minutes late but didn't impact catching the 14:47 to Barnstaple. That train is an interesting one. A diesel two unit job, that has bus seats, and a very spacious feel to it.
Walked over the bridge to the bus station and hopped straight onto the 15:55 to Ilfracombe for £3.40. Got off the bus a few stops early, but it gave me the opportunity to see the town. Walked right passed my hotel with out seeing it, but did visit the Lundy shore office to check sailings.
Back up the harbour to check in - room is pleasant, and very close to the harbour, so handy for tomorrow.
Out to have a walk, and climbed up the hill in town and saw Lundy in the distance. Then climbed another hill that has a chapel at the top. The volunteer who's manning the shop has been to Lundy over 30 times, and has stayed in the radio room. Good reports. Back to hotel for food. Curry and fudge cake. Then out to have another look around. The place is pretty deserted. I was expecting more tourists, but it seems to be mainly loud locals.
Back to hotel and bed.
