Day 2 - Fri 1 Oct 2010
Down for the start of breakfast at 8:45, had the full English with black pudding. The forecast is foul, so ate fast and got out while it was still dry - walked up the centre of the island and hit the dunes on the north coast, there's a lovely beach, but there's a lot of plastic on it. Just past that there's a pyramid that's used as a navigation aid. I'm now heading south, and into the teeth of a gale but there's no rain yet. At least when I get to the castle the wind is then on my back.
It's close to midday and the causeway is open so the day trippers are starting to arrive. I decide to get off the island and see if there are any trips to the Farnes from Seahouses -yes I'm pushing my luck but as Sean from the hotel says 'shy bairns get nowt'. I drive past Bamburgh castle, which is very impressive and much larger than the one on Holy Island. I'm tempted to stop, but I will have some time to morrow.
The weather has turned and the rain is coming down in sheets. The sign on the harbour says there are no sailings today. So I head back to the island.
For some Mad reason I decide to take a walk down to the castle, the wind is so strong I'm almost blown over, and the rain is horizontal! The castle is interesting, and had a make over by Lutyens the same guy who did the parliament building in New Delhi. Even with foot thick Walls you can still hear the gale blowing outside.
The walk back is easier As the wind is behind me, but I'm now wet both front and back.
Spend some time drying out, before heading out for supper at the crown and anchor. The food here is better than last night, but although the wind has dropped i still get soaked walking over.
